So, the question was asked,

And was answered, too,

Of the thing that had made

The chicken go, “Woo!”

We learned that the sound

Was made mostly because 

Of a large and oddly shaped

Egg with some flaws. 

But, more questions, it seems

Have begun to arise.

About what made that egg

That shape and that size. 

And so, my friends,

We are here to discuss

Exactly what the cause was

Of all of this fuss. 

Some feel that that chicken

Just could not have laid it. 

And that someone, or something,

Snuck in and replaced it. 

But, however it happened

To one day appear,

The source of the egg

Remained quite unclear.

In example, the opinion of

Professor Q. Morris,

Was that the egg was, in fact,

From an old stegosaurus. 

But, Ms. Freyer-Wilson,

A biology teacher,

Thought that it might be

From a different creature. 

“A platypus,” she said,

“Is a rare sort of mammal 

That lays eggs, you see?”

And then showed an example. 

Some others believed

It was some kind of cross

Between a small porcupine

And a large albatross. 

The opinions went on

For more than a while.

Of lizards and crabs

And new crocodiles.

A small group believed

That it might be a frog

That somehow got mixed

With a spiky hedgehog.

Alligator, ostrich

Or, maybe, echidna.

One thing was for sure...

It was quite the enigma. 

The news of the egg

Had spread far and wide.

And everyone was curious

As to what was inside.

News crews and cameras,

From near and from far,

All made their way down

To Farmer Brown’s farm. 

They spoke to the pig.

And they spoke to the horse.

(But neither said anything

To them, of course.)

With everyone there

I should probably mention...

That the chicken REALLY

Enjoyed the attention!

She sat on that egg

And puffed up her chest.

And turned for the camera

To her side that was best.

She shifted, just slightly,

As she turned around,

And then, from beneath her,

Came an interesting sound.

It was a bit like a tapping,

But not quite a knock.

And everyone went quiet

With curiosity and shock.

As the henhouse went silent

Another sound could be heard.

At first, it was once,

Then a second and third. 

Just before each of the taps

Could be heard a small, “Hic!”

It went slowly, at first,

And then really quick. 

The egg started to move

And to shimmy and shake

It began to crack.

And it began to break.

The Hic! Tap! continued.

As the egg bounced around.

And then something was noticed

By old Farmer Brown.

After every Hic! Tap!

The egg did a small jump.

And then, on the surface,

Would appear a new bump.

And on one of these jumps

The egg fell to the ground!

It broke open and shell pieces

Scattered around.

As the farmer looked down

He understood why

The egg was that bumpy,

That shape and that size. 

And then Farmer Brown laughed

And gently picked up...

A small, rooster chick

That had the hiccups!
